As a child, I learned because ... well, that's what children do. For that reason, and because the
adults told me that I had to. But, for most of my school years, I looked at learning as something
that had to be done. If I didn't get decent grades, I would be in trouble, and I didn't like the
consequences of "being in trouble".
As a young man, I learned because it was usually a part of my "job description". AND, learning was
almost always fun! Learning was fun and learning was profitable.
Now, in my "middle-aged" years (and rapidly approaching "old-fart" status), I truly enjoy the mental
challenge of learning new things. Learning still is fun. And it still can be profitable!!
And, perhaps even more important, I believe that keeping an active mind helps one to age gracefully. (I'm
not alone in this belief; there are many experts who claim that an active mind helps to slow the aging
process.)
I encourage you to learn, and to keep learning no matter what your age. Actually, I go beyond mere
encouragement - I challenge YOU.
